Why did you join FarmHouse? What is your most memorable FarmHouse experience? Did a chapter brother or alumnus influence you in a meaningful way? Did you make friends for life, discover your career path, or even meet your future spouse through FarmHouse?
We want to hear your FarmHouse story, and our FH Oral History Project seeks to capture those for future generations.
We have partnered with Publishing Concepts Inc. (PCI) to produce a one-of-a-kind opportunity for our organization by creating a unique oral history archive to tell the stories of our members across generations, chapters, professions, geography and life experiences. All of your amazing stories will be converted from audio recordings to written stories to be shared with all of our members.
Beginning in November 2023, PCI will reach out to FarmHouse members seeking stories and requesting updated contact information. This is the same company who has previously produced our popular hardcover FarmHouse Alumni Directory. You will soon receive a postcard with a 1-800 number inviting you to call them to participate.
The PCI staff is trained to capture FarmHouse memories and will lead you through the process of telling your FarmHouse story. Each story will be recorded, transcribed, and, along with submitted photos, published in a book along with an electronic version available for purchase. No purchase is required to share your FarmHouse memory.
“This is a great opportunity for us to connect with our brothers to preserve special FarmHouse memories for future generations and offer a one-of-a-kind keepsake to our brotherhood,” Dave Hansen (Iowa State 90), Fraternity executive director and CEO said. “Every memory shared by our members contributes to the rich narrative of FarmHouse and we encourage all alumni to take part in this meaningful project.”
Sharing your memories will ensure FarmHouse’s rich history will be preserved for generations to come and help inspire new young men to join our Fraternity. Thank you for your participation!
Frequently Asked Questions
How does FarmHouse benefit from this project?
FarmHouse will benefit in several important ways:
- Membership engagement – prompts FH brothers to reflect on their FarmHouse experience and strengthen their affinity with the Fraternity and Foundation
- History – provides an avenue to record the stories of FH brothers across the country from every decade
- Updated information – with more than 23,000 living FH brothers, it’s critical to keep our data updated so we can share important updates about the Fraternity and the Foundation
- Access to audio recordings of FarmHouse brothers describing their experiences in their own words
I received an email/postcard/phone call from a company asking for my personal information and a story about FarmHouse. Is this a legitimate project or is it a scam?
It’s legit! We have partnered with PCI (also known as Publishing Concepts Inc.) to produce an oral history publication for FarmHouse. PCI is a family owned business based in Dallas, Texas, who has published directories for educational institutions, fraternities, sororities and military organizations across the nation for nearly 100 years. They also have produced FarmHouse’s last six alumni directory projects. New this time, the project allows FarmHouse and your brothers to hear about your personal experiences and share how the Fraternity has shaped your life.
How do I know my information will only be used for FH Oral History Project purposes?
FarmHouse and PCI are committed to protecting your information. Any names, addresses or personal information provided to PCI for the oral history project will be held confidential by PCI, except to the extent they are utilized in, or in the preparation of, the project and except as required by court order or law. Upon completion of the project, PCI will redact personal identifiable information from any and all electronic files we have supplied or were produced by PCI in connection with the production of the oral history project.
Can I send my story to FarmHouse International directly?
To ensure your story is recorded for the publication, please call the phone number listed on your postcard or email. PCI will record, transcribe and edit your story to consider it for inclusion in the final publication. Please don’t send stories directly to a headquarters staff member as PCI is collecting hundreds of alumni stories in order to produce the book and online platform.
What happens when I call PCI?
You will speak with a PCI representative and will be asked to verify your contact information so we can stay in touch with you. Keeping our records up-to-date is an important priority! Then, you will have the opportunity to share your FH story and talk about what your membership in the Fraternity has meant to you. Your story will be considered for inclusion in the project. The PCI representative will then provide you with several options to purchase the oral history publication book and other FH-related merchandise. Note that, while the final publication will be a unique memento of our Fraternity’s history, there is absolutely no obligation to make a purchase.
What type of questions will PCI ask me?
They will ask you a variety of questions, which may include:
- What inspired you to join FarmHouse?
- How has FH impacted your life?
- Were you a part of FH during a historical moment?
- How did your FH experience empower you?
- What does FH mean to you?
Can I choose what information is printed in the publication?
When you call to update your information, you can tell the representative if you prefer any of your information to be excluded. You can also communicate your preferences to PCI’s customer service team at 1-800-982-1590 or customerservice@publishingconcepts.com.
I updated my information but need some more time to think about what experience to share. Can I call back later?
You can call back at any time to share your FarmHouse story.
I shared a story and the representative said I could send some photos. How do I do this?
You will receive an email from PCI with a link to upload up to two photos (black and white or color) plus captions. If you have also purchased a book but do not have an email address on file, you will be sent a photo mailer to send physical photos to be printed. (note: photos will be returned if you include a self-addressed, stamped envelope)
I’d like to add or remove info from my story. How do I do that?
You will receive an email prior to publication with a link to review your transcribed story and make any edits.
Can anyone purchase a book?
The FarmHouse oral history project publication book is available for sale only to FarmHouse brothers.
What is the digital publication, since it isn’t a download or installed program?
Access to the digital publication is sent via email and the buyer creates a password to view it. It’s basically a secure website archive that allows the buyer to listen to and read many of the stories collected throughout our project. Because it is not limited by the number of pages it will contain more stories than can be included in the physical book and allows the buyer to listen to the stories as told.
I ordered a book and/or merchandise, when will I receive it?
We anticipate the PCI project will take 9-12 months to complete. Orders will be fulfilled and mailed at the end of the Oral History Project. Please anticipate you will receive the items you purchased in fall 2024.
I ordered a book/package over the phone and would like to cancel my order. How do I do this?
Please contact PCI’s customer service helpdesk at 1-800-982-1590 or customerservice@publishingconcepts.com and they will take care of this for you.
